Webcom Paper Developments:
Webcom Offers New Eco-Friendly "Legacy" Text Papers

tree.jpgPaper is the largest component of any book, and at Webcom we recognize that our paper usage has a major impact on the environment.

Through the introduction of three new grades of paper, Webcom Limited is pleased to be supporting a major environmental initiative.

Webcom will now stock environmental alternatives to our most popular papers. Grades comparable to our 40 lb. BookBrite groundwood stock called Legacy Brite (45 lb.); a 50 lb. Trade Book Natural fine paper alternative called Legacy Natural (55 lb.) and a 60 lb. Economy Offset alternative called Legacy Offset (60 lb.) will soon be available.

These new grades are all in compliance with "Markets Initiative" guidelines. "Markets Initiative" is a coalition project of Greenpeace Canada, the Sierra Club of B.C., and Friends of Clayoquot Sound. The mandate of the project is to work with Canadian companies to reduce their consumption of ancient forest products. In this way the initiative is helping to stimulate a growing market for environmentally sound paper and wood alternatives within Canada.

forest.jpg"There is growing support amongst Canadian trade publishers, including many who have already committed to this initiative, as well as a renewed interest in environmental protection amongst the book-buying public," says Deborah Kupperman, Director of Marketing, Webcom. "As a key link in the supply chain, we feel that it is our responsibility to create the link between paper production and paper usage, by making possible the growing number of options for environmentally responsible products."

Webcom supports environmental initiatives that promote the protection of the environment and the responsible use of natural resources. These "Legacy" grades will be available to Webcom's customers for upcoming projects, beginning in August.

Paper Tip:
Webcom's New Hi-Brite Sheet Offers a Cleaner, Whiter Shade

Webcom will be introducing an improved, new 35 lb. Groundwood Hi-Brite in August. Although there will be a very slight shade change, this new sheet will maintain the same caliper and 75 pt. Brightness of the previous sheet and has been manufactured to render a cleaner, whiter shade.

The shade, caliper and price stability of the new 35 lb. Hi-Brite might make this a good alternative to Publication Plus or Publishers' Preference, which could be effected by price instability in the short term.

Pricing Trends

While the availability of Offset papers is stable, prices are currently unstable with market trends indicating pricing could be effected.

Goundwood paper prices remain stable in the short term but prices could increase as publishers switch to Groundwood papers from Offset. Newsprint price increases announced for August 1 will likely effect future Groundwood paper prices.

Webcom customers requiring uncoated papers for large print runs should book their projects early to benefit from paper cost protection.

Taking A Closer Look At Digital Papers

press.jpgAs an early adopter of digital print technology, Webcom is currently contributing to a study by the University of Toronto Pulp and Paper Centre on the surface chemistry of digital paper.

Properties for ink hold-out, print density, and print gloss are greatly affected by paper surface attributes which, when optimized enable the paper to hold the electrical charge necessary for attracting ink to paper.

The long-term objective of the research is to investigate the impact of paper surface structure and chemistry on the quality of digital print, and to develop new tools and know-how for the design of superior digital paper products, inks and toners.

In this way, Webcom is helping to support the development of quality improvements for this technology.
