Webcom Delivers Catalog Solutions

As a distributor of industrial fasteners, Spaenaur’s commitment to its customers is to ship 98% of all stock items within 24 hours of the order. To do this, Spaenaur maintains an inventory of 500 million parts. From the beginning, Spaenaur co-founders Roy Spaetzel and Howard Hessenauer saw the need for a product catalog to provide easy-to-access product information to customers and serve as its key marketing tool. The first catalog, published in 1938, was 66 pages. Today, the catalog offers 70,000 different products on 1,784 pages, in both hard and soft cover versions.

Recognizing the need to streamline the catalog’s pre-production process, Webcom and Spaenaur aimed to identify key areas for improvement. The biggest challenge was in automating files. Working closely with the Spaenaur catalog production team, our prepress team conducted numerous file exchange tests, well in advance of live production. The result was a more seamless and cost-efficient process for the client.

Webcom’s catalog solution extends beyond the printed catalog. To broaden Spaenaur’s reach and take advantage of on-line marketing tools, we are providing expert advice on publishing the catalog on the Web in searchable and downloadable form. We’ve also suggested an editable CD-ROM version, as an alternative to marking up printed copies. Plus, Webcom continues to offer assistance with Spaenaur’s transition to new catalog production software, including on-site tutorials.

To further increase the marketing effectiveness of Spaenaur’s catalog, Webcom has had discussions with Spaenaur about the many benefits of Digital Print Technologies, including issuing smaller, cost-effective versions of their catalog tailored to each specific market.

Spaenaur has been a Canadian-owned distributor of industrial fasteners since 1936. Fasteners include rivets, cotter pins, machine keys, hose clamps, and anchors, mainly for the automotive and construction industries. Today, the business serves a worldwide market from its 85,000 square foot facility in Kitchener, Ontario and employs 125 people.
