Text Papers Making the Right Choice
The choice of text paper is critical in the planning of a book, manual, catalog or directory. Cost is always a factor, but the first step is a careful analysis of how the book will be used and what its buyers or users will expect.
What quality level can the project's budget support?
There are many stock alternatives that can be cost effective without compromising the integrity of the project. That's why Webcom inventories 19 different papers to choose from.
What is the expected life span of the book?
Projects with longer life cycles may warrant using alkaline, permanent papers because they resist the effects of aging such as yellowing.
Does the book's content demand specific paper properties?
Some designs may call for a bright white paper to highlight color and graphics while others may require high opacity to keep the type from showing through the other side of the page.
Does the book need a certain look
- fat & bulky or slim & compact?

You may want to bulk a book up to increase its perceived value in the highly competitive retail markets or you may want to slim it down to make it more manageable.
Will the project be reprinted frequently?
If so, then you should specify one of Webcom's inventoried stocks to ensure the paper is always in stock for any size of reprint.
How will the book be distributed?
Production, mailing and shipping costs can be slashed by using less bulky or lower basis weight paper. Lighter weight grades are also more environmentally friendly.
Different books must satisfy different demands and Webcom has the experience to help our customers select the best text paper to meet those demands. To order samples of Webcom's inventoried text stocks on-line, click here.

Legacy Grades
Eco-friendly options
Reducing the collective impact that we have on the environment can be accomplished by:
- Maximizing recycled content, particularly post-consumer waste
- Addressing the means of processing paper
- Ensuring well-managed forests when sourcing virgin content
- Protecting ancient or endangered forests
All of these measures are taken into account in our Legacy line. This means options are offered with both Ancient Forest Friendly endorsement and the increasingly popular Forest Stewardship Council certification.

The Legacy line got its start in 2001 when Webcom printed the first Harry Potter paperback for Raincoast on Legacy Brite 100% recycled paper. Today, the list of options has doubled that originally introduced and now represents 40% of our total paper portfolio.
Virtually any virgin grade can be substituted with comparable and affordable environmental alternatives from 30 to 60 lbs basis weight, including high quality options.
