Internet Transfer
Using the Internet can be a great way to send missing elements, corrections or even an entire job to Webcom. Regardless of the method you choose to send your file (e-mail or FTP) and regardless of the file size, the files must be compressed using some form of file compression software. This compression acts as a protective wrapper that shields your file as it traverses the vast regions of cyberspace, and helps ensure that it will arrive safely on our end. For Macintosh files, the attachment must be stuffed using StuffIt (DropStuff®, StuffIt Lite®, StuffIt Deluxe®) or be encoded using a "BinHex" encoding utility program. Otherwise, the files will likely loose their resource forks making them unusable. On the PC, the file should be zipped using Window's native Zip option or with common applications, such as WinZip®.

E-mail (for files less than 1 MB only)
Using your mail reading software (Netscape Messenger®, Microsoft Outlook®, etc.), create a new mail message and address it to the appropriate person. If you’re not sure to whom the files should be sent, please contact your Project Manager. In the body of the message, include a description of the file you are sending, the job for which the file is intended, and how we can reach you in case of a transmission problem. The final step is to attach the file. Each program handles this slightly differently, but they will all have a command to handle this attachment. Using e-mail is acceptable for small files but is not recommended for files larger than 1 MB (as sending and receiving email servers will have attachment file size limits).

FTP
FTP stands for "File Transfer Protocol" and is a much more reliable method for sending larger files. In order to be able to send files by FTP, you must have software that supports this type of information exchange. You may opt for specific FTP software, such as Fetch® for the Macintosh or WS_FTP for the PC, however most browsers, such as Netscape Navigator® and Internet Explorer®, handle the basic features of FTP. Our FTP link for browsers is: ftp://ftp.webcomlink.com. A web browser is suitable for basic FTP usage, but heavy users should consider acquiring specific FTP software. Again, all files being sent to our FTP site must be compressed before being sent.

If you’re familiar with FTP, you know that some FTP sites like Apple, and Microsoft, support anonymous FTP logins. To ensure the security of your files, Webcom requires the use of a unique login ID and password. We have different methods of accessing our FTP server depending on the volume of files you will be submitting. If you are going to send only one file per year, we have a generic login and password that will allow you to access the site. If you will be sending a higher volume of files more frequently, we will set up a specific account for you. FTP accounts can be made on request - contact your Project Manager.

If you are using Macintosh, files should be converted to BinHex (.hqx) or Stuffed (.sit) before being sent to Webcom, regardless of how the files are being sent (Please do not send .SEA files). StuffitTM is a popular utility which will allow you to do this. It is beneficial to compress your files before sending in order to decrease file transfer time, on both Mac and PC platforms.

Because our FTP site is not checked on a regular basis, please call and let us know when you are sending files. Remember that sending your files by e-mail or FTP does not eliminate the need to send hardcopy to Webcom. A full set of accurate hardcopy is still required to image your job. For login and password details, please contact your Webcom Sales Representative.
