CREATING PDF FILES
For specific instructions by application, please select from the list that follows. For each section you can select
a print-friendly version:

These settings can be used for both Windows and Macintosh
Step 1
- From the Settings Menu, select Job Options. This opens a dialog box containing a series of tabbed panels.
Step 2
- On the General tab, set Compatibility to Acrobat 5.0 (PDF 1.4).
- Clear all options below Compatibility.
- Select All for Page Range.
- Select Left for Binding.
- Set Resolution to 2400 DPI.
- For Page Size enter values that will accommodate the size of the document. In most cases Distiller will get the page size from PostScript code and override the values entered here.

Step 3
- Select the Compressions Tab..
- For both Color and Grayscale Images, select Bicubic Downsampling, 300 DPI for images above 450 DPI, set Compression to ZIP and set Quality to 8bit.
- For Monochrome Images, select Bicubic Downsampling to 1200 DPI for image above 1800 DPI and set Compression to CCITT Group 4.
- Select Compress Text and Line Art.

Step 4
- Select the Fonts Tab.
- Select Embed All Fonts and Subset Fonts and set the value to 35%.
- Select When Embedding Fails and select Cancel Job from the pulldown menu. This will ensure that a PDF won’t be generated unless all the fonts used in the document are either embedded in the PostScript file or available to Distiller when generating the PDF file.
- Clear all fonts from the Never Embed field. (There may be instances when the Base 14 fonts need to be listed in this field but it is best to start with none).

Step 5
- Select the Color Tab..
- For Adobe Color Settings, select Color Management Off from the drop-down list.
- Select Preserve Overprint Settings.
- Select Preserve Under Color Removal and Black Generation Settings.
- Select Preserve Transfer Functions.
- Ensure that Preserve Halftone Information is not selected.

Step 6
- Select the Advanced Tab.
- Select the following options: Preserve Level 2 copypage Semantics, Illustrator Overprint Mode, Convert Gradients to smooth shades.
- Under Document Structuring Conventions, select the following: Preserve EPS information from DSC, Preserve Document Information from DSC. De-select Preserve OPI Comments.

Step 7
- Click Save as…
- Type a name and Click Save.
- Click OK.
On the main Distiller Window, for Job Options, select the name of the set that was just created.

These settings can be used for both Windows and Macintosh
Step 1
- From the Settings Menu, select Edit Adobe PDF Settings. This opens a dialog box containing a series of tabbed panels.

Step 2
- On the General tab, set Compatibility to Acrobat 5.0 (PDF 1.4).
- Set Object Level Compression to Off.
- Set Auto-Rotate Pages to Off.
- Set Binding to Left.
- Set Resolution to 2400 DPI.
- Select All Pages.
- For Page Size enter values that will accommodate the size of the document. In most cases Distiller will get the page size from PostScript code and override the values entered here.

Step 3
- Select the Images Tab..

Step 7
- Click Save as…
- Type a name and Click Save.
- On the main Distiller Window, for Default Settings, select the name of the set that was just created.

FROM INDESIGN CS AND CS2
These settings can be used for both Windows and Macintosh
Step 1
- Select the Edit Menu and then Transparency Flattener Presets
- Click New
- Enter a name for the new preset.
- Set Line Art and Text Resolution to 2400 PPI.
- Set Gradient and Mesh Resolution to 300 PPI.
- Select Convert all Text to Outlines.
- Select Convert all Strokes to Outlines.
- De-select Clip Complex Regions.
- Click OK and Ok again.



Step 2
- From the File Menu, select Export.
- Give the file a name, a location to save the file to and select Adobe PDF as the format. Click Save.
- On the General Panel select None for Standard.
- Select Acrobat 4.0 for Compatibility.
- Select All pages.
- Clear all other options.

Step 3
- On the Compression Panel, set Color and Grayscale images to Bicubic Downsampling at 300DPI, set Compression to ZIP and Quality to 8-bit.
- Set Monochrome Images to Bicubic Downsampling at 1200 DPI and set Compression to CCITT Group 4.
- Click Compress Text and Line Art.

Step 4
- On the Marks & Bleeds Panel, Select Crop Marks.
- Set Weight to .25 pts. and Offset to .33 inches.
- Set Bleed amounts to 3/16 inches.
- Do not select Use Document Bleed Settings.

Step 5
- Select the Output Panel.
- For Color Conversion select No Color Conversion.
- For Profile Inclusion Policy select Don’t Include Profiles.

Step 6
- On the Advanced Panel, set Subset Fonts to 35%.
- Do not select Omit for OPI.
- Select the Flattener Preset previously created.

Step 7
- Select the Security Panel.
- Clear all options.
- Click OK.

In some cases, PDF files can also be generated directly from applications in Windows. When Acrobat 6 or 7 is installed in Windows, a PDF driver is installed in the Printers Control Panel. As with PostScript drivers, the PDF driver must also be configured before generating PDF files.
The following are the steps necessary to configure the PDF driver:
- In the Printers and Faxes control panel select Adobe PDF.

- Right-click and select Printing Preferences.

- In the Printing Preferences select the PDF Settings tab.
- Deselect 'Do not send fonts to Adobe PDF'.
- Select Edit located to the right of 'Adobe PDF Conversion Settings'.

General Tab
- Set Compatibility to Acrobat 5.0 (PDF 1.4).
- Set Object Level Compression to Off.
- Set Auto-Rotate Pages to Off.
- Set Binding to Left and Resolution to 2400DPI.
- Set the Default Page Size 8.5X11. Note: If the document is 8.5X11 and it contains bleed set the Page Size to 11X17.

Images Tab
- For Color Images select Bicubic Downsampling to 300 DPI for images above 450 DPI. Repeat for Grayscale Images.
- For Monochrome images select Bicubic Downsampling to 1200 DPI for images above 1800 DPI.
- Set Compression to CCITT Group 4.
- Set Anti-alias to Off.

Fonts Tab
- Select Embed all fonts.
- Select subset embedded fonts and set the percentage to 35%.
- Set When embedding fails to Cancel job. (If any font used in the document is not available at the time the PDF is being generated, PDF maker will not generate a PDF).
- Clear all fonts from the 'Never Embed" field. There may be instances when the base 14 fonts have to be listed but it is best to start with an empty field. The base 14 fonts are Helvetica, Times, Courier and their various styles and the fonts Symbol and Zapf Dingbats.

Color Tab
- Under Adobe Color Settings, click the down-arrow and select Color Management Off.
- Select Preserve under color removal and black generation.
- De-select Preserve halftone information.

Advance Tab
- De-select Preserve OPI comments (bottom of screen).
- De-select Resize page and center artwork for EPS files.
- Click the Save As… button and give this collection of settings a new name. Do not remove the .joboptions extension.
- Click Ok to save.
- Back at the Adobe PDF Settings dialog box make sure that the name of the new settings file is selected as the Default Settings.
- Click Apply and then OK.
