June 9, 2003: It's Time to Spread the Word
Webcom was pleased to recently be part of a very successful fund-raising campaign supporting Toronto's Frontier College. Tom Best, former President of CDG Books, led the "Spread the Word" campaign and set the goal of raising $100,000 for Frontier College's literacy program. He followed the example of Tim Hortons' annual Camp Day initiative, where the proceeds from coffee sales over a 24-hour period go to the Tim Hortons Children's Foundation. For Spread the Word the date June 7 was selected and on that date Indigo Books and Music donated 5% of book sales from across the country to Frontier College. Participating publishers also donated 5% of all book sales for books sold in the chain on that date. The event was a big success: Spread the Word surpassed its goal and raised $146,000, the literacy program's largest donation ever from the publishing industry. In all, 50 publishers participated. Tom Best is hoping that Spread the Word will be an annual event. Webcom was involved in the campaign by producing the plaques (sample shown above) that were distributed to each of the participating companies at a special presentation ceremony in Toronto on July 9, 2003 at BookExpo Canada.
